Welcome to Mobile Satellite 2008

Second annual conference for the financing and strategy of mobile satellite projects

Maturing business plans, ongoing capital requirements and a coming auction of S-band spectrum in Europe stand to make 2008 a crunch year for all players involved in the global mobile satellite services sector. In the US, all holders of ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) spectrum have been active in the past year raising money and attempting to tie down key partnerships while existing MSS operators have been pushing ahead with plans of their own to replace ageing orbital fleets.

With MSS pure plays all in action in 2007 and 2008, two giants of the fixed satellite world, SES and Eutelsat, have both sounded their intention to make the mobile space their own, having launched a joint venture that will bid for European spectrum against Inmarsat and Terrestar when S-band comes up for auction.

Meanwhile, new investors continue to show interest in mobile satellite, with US hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners building up large stakes in Inmarsat and private equity giant Carlyle acquiring the communications specialist Arinc.

However, the MSS sector faces threats and disruption from ongoing satellite technical problems as well as developments in wireless technology, not least a unified EU standard for terrestrial mobile broadcasting, as well as a lingering investor scepticism into the viability of stand-alone ATC business models.

Building on the success of 2007, the 2nd Annual Satellite Spring Forum, which will be held in London on March 18 2008, brings together key executives, investors, investment bankers and other stakeholders for the world’s event dedicated to the mobile satellite services space. Focused panel discussions covering financing and regulatory briefings, ATC updates, operator health checks and services and applications providers provides the delegate with unrivalled access to industry knowledge and networking opportunities.

Mobile Satellite 2008 is a must-attend event for anyone looking to capitalise on the growing market for mobile satellite services.
