While XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio both experienced positive operating cash flow for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2006 after five years of operations in the U.S., projects of satellite mobile entertainment services multiply in Europe. They will require large financings for both capital expenditure and operating expenditure over the next few years.
The experience of digital audio broadcasting services in the US provides a benchmark of what could be needed in Europe. Together, XM and Sirius have raised close to $10 billion in the past ten years through debt and equity issuances, of which $3 billion was spent on capex between 1997 and 2006. While the bulk of the capex was to secure spectrum and manufacture the satellites, terrestrial repeaters and broadcast centers were also costly items.
In Europe, several multimedia broadcasting and communication satellite systems, sponsored by the likes of Worldspace Europe, Europa-Max, Ondas Media and TerreStar Global are actively seeking to raise finance, while SES and Eutelsat are also working on a joint venture S-Band project of their own. The capital intensive nature of these projects is sure to keep the finance industry busy for some time.
The Mobile Satellite Forum; which takes place on 20th March, 2007 at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London, bring together four unique panels in the mobile broadcasting and mobile communications sector. The day opens with a finance panel composed of leading banks and financial institutions that will review the financing of the MSS sector and its systems.
Mobile Satellite Forum 2007 is a must-attend event for anyone looking to capitalize on the growing market for mobile satellite services.
Mobile Satellite Forum springs out of the annual September event World Satellite Business Week, with the aim to focus on a theme of current particular interest for the satellite business sector and is a collaboration between Satellite Finance and Euroconsult in partnership with Inmarsat, Eutelsat, SES, Terrestar, Marsh, White & Case and Space News.
This is a unique opportunity to benchmark, network and do business with the mobile satellite sector.
We look forward to welcoming you in London on 20th March.
Yours sincerely,
Mobile Satellite Forum Team
